Friday's Five ๐๐ผ #100 ๐
Happy Friday's Five,
Ta-Da to edition #100 of this weekly newsletter and I am excited about celebrating this milestone with you. I've enjoyed compiling and sharing this short email with you for nearly two years. Thank you for reading! If you have any feedback about things you like, don't like, or that you would like to read more of, please share!
What I'm reading
Solitude and Leadership โ If you want others to follow, learn to be alone with your thoughts - The American Scholar
The Spirit of Leadership โ I'm preparing to get certified in The Leadership Circle in a few weeks and I am reading this white paper in anticipation of it.
What I'm listening to
Sigur Rรณs โ Liminal Sleep โ I am fan of sleep and I am a fan of Sigur Rรณs so this latest 'album' is a welcome addition to my music library.
L'Aupaire โ Reframing โ I've discovered this artist through some of Spotify's personalized playlists and am happy to finally listen to the full album.
What I'm watching
Succession โ this new HBO series portrays a family not unlike the Murdochs and News Corp and it's very well done (#cringe).
What I'm thinking about
This week my sister shared a series of recordings in which my dad tells the origin story of our family, tracing back to the Huguenots in France and the origin of our family name Noรซl. It was nice to hear his voice a year after he's passed and it made me think about the power of origin stories and how we often forget to capture and document it. If your parents and grandparents are still around, spend some time with them, a recorder, and their stories.
What else?!
"Communities feel magical, but they don't come together by magic." A few years ago, I sat down with my friend Bailey Richardson to share my experience of building SoundCloud's community of artists. Bailey was on a quest to learn and understand how and why communities emerge, grow, and flourish. This week she announced the publication of her book 'Get Together' that captures her findings. It looks stunning and I can't wait to read it. Here is the (equally stunning) trailer announcing the book. And if you want to dig even deeper, here is an in-depth mix of interview and How-To guide by Bailey.
Thanks for reading #100, and have a great weekend!
David
