Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #101
Happy Friday's Five,
Wow. To my surprise, my best friend Matze endorsed last week's Friday's Five in his own newsletter and so many new people signed up. Hi and welcome, I am glad you're here.
Greetings from the Spanish countryside near Valencia where I am spending the week with my client Cowboy Bikes. I've facilitated team retrospectives and a series of workshops with a focus on company vision and how to improve collaboration and communication and I feel excited and inspired about seeing this startup with 15 people evolve into a company with 50 people and counting. I love their focus on people & company culture, their passion for their customers, and the product they're building.
What I'm reading
I first met serial food entrepreneur Emily LaFav Olson in San Francisco during my time at SoundCloud. While I don't get to spend so much time on the West Coast anymore, I feel connected to Emily through 'Starter Magazine', an email magazine that she lovingly puts together to document the creation of her current company, 'Rainbow Rd.', which she's building as a new mom out of her new home in Kauai, Hawaii.
What I'm listening to
Did you watch (or hear about) the insane record-breaking Wimbledon tennis final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic? I never spent much time to learn more about Federer and therefor enjoyed how he opens up about the finals and other things in this The New Yorker Radio Hour podcast.
What I'm watching
"When in doubt, listen to The National!" is a mental note that I've been telling myself for over a decade now and it has served me well. With this live performance at New York's Beacon Theatre on Amazon Prime I can now expand that note to "when in doubt, listen to or watch The National!"
What I'm thinking about
It's been a period of closure and finality for me personally as we finalized the sale of my parent's house back in my home town in Belgium last Friday. It's a bittersweet moment filled with memories of the past and a good long look forward into the future.
What else?!
The Leader of the Week (should that become a thing?) for me is Greta Thunberg. It's been a joy to follow her cross the Atlantic on a sailboat on Instagram and I am looking forward to seeing her spark a similar conversation in the U.S. that she has sparked in Europe. We need more people like Greta.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
