Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #104
Happy Friday's Five,
Hello from another early Friday morning start. I'm in Berlin headed for a second session with the recent new client after I spent a few very intense and impactful days with a newly formed leadership team of a long-time client.
What I'm reading
For my work, I spend a lot of time in conference rooms of all shapes and sizes and it strikes me often these rooms seem to be designed with form over function in mind. The design often seems at odds with what people need most of these rooms, as this survey shows about what employees want most from their workplaces. Spoiler: it's not beanbags and ping pong tables.
What I'm listening to
Jerry Colonna is a coach I've written about before in this newsletter. I've had the privilege to work with Jerry during my time at SoundCloud and his work–as well as Jerry as a person–has had a tremendous impact on me as a leader and now as a coach and facilitator. I've learned a ton and he shares some of his magic in this in-depth interview with Tim Ferriss. Highly recommended!
What I'm watching
Corporate cultures and cultural differences are some of my favorite parts of the work I do. That's why I loved the Netflix documentary 'American Factory' about a factory in Ohio that was shut down and re-opened by a new Chinese owner. It's amazing on so many levels to see two very distinct cultures clash.
What I'm thinking about
Today kicks off the week-long Global Climate Strike when millions of people will walk out of their workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. I will be stuck in another conference room with a client and will think about everyone out there in solidarity.
What else?!
What it's like to manage and tour-manage one of the most influential hip hop ensembles like the Wu-Tang Clan? What it's like to manage and coordinate individuals like RZA, GZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan? This and many more questions like these will be on our list when we interview Eva Ries for Edition #38 of Role Models. Eva has been working with Wu-Tang Clan since the early Nineties. Join us on September 25 to hear it all directly from Eva. Get your tickets here.
Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!
