Friday's Five ๐๐ผ #117
Happy Friday's Five,
Hello from the train on my way from Berlin to Brussels. Driving home for Christmas. Phew, we made it. Break mode: ON.
What I'm reading
This Could Be Our Future by Yancey Strickler. I had mentioned the book by the co-founder of Kickstarter a few FFs ago and finally gotten around to reading it. In his first book, Yancey makes a case for moving on from the idea of 'financial maximization' and replace it with a society that is more fair, generous, and ready for the future.
What I'm listening to
Two podcast recommendations for you this week: first, I enjoyed listening to this long conversation between Sam Harris of the 'Making Sense Podcast' and Ricky Gervais. They spent quite some time in the intersection of free speech, humor, and outrage (culture) and it's a great example for a civic conversation that allows for 'thinking out loud'. Second, and if you listen in German, I recommend 'Heute in 5 Jahren' (Spotify link), a podcast series by Mit Vergnรผgen in which thinkers imagine what our world looks like 5 years from now.
What I'm watching
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of the nine judges on the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court and the movie 'On The Basis of Sex' tells the story about the start of her career, from first-year law student until arguing a case that set a precedent to strike down many gender-based laws. I knew RBG was a badass and this movie shows why. Find it on Netflix.
What I'm thinking about
"Eventually we realize that not knowing what to do is just as real and just as useful as knowing what to do. Not knowing stops us from taking false directions. Not knowing what to do, we start to pay real attention. If you think you know where you are, you stop looking." โ David Whyte
What else?!
In some year-end Role Models news, the series of events and podcasts I started with my friend Isa almost 5 years ago, we hosted an event for our podcast guests and community members to conclude the year. Find some impressions of the evening on our Facebook page. Then on Monday, Lea-Sophie Cramer, founder and CEO of Amorelie, was our guest on stage for a live taping of the podcast for her last official appearance before moving on from the company she co-founded. Check out the photos from the event and listen to the episode here.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend, and Happy Holidays!
David
