Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #127
Happy Friday's Five,
Hello from the countryside near Berlin where today my colleague Dirk and I are co-facilitating a team offsite for a client with 50+ people.
What I'm reading
The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake by David Brooks for The Atlantic. A historic journey back to the question about how the modern construct of a family emerged and solidified. Read the piece.
What I'm listening to
Here are three podcast episodes that got my head spinning this week and that couldn't be more different from each other:
Once I overcame the 'two-middle-aged-white-dudes-talking-about-white-dudes-stuff' bias, I found a whole bunch of nuggets of wisdom in this conversation between Brian Koppelman and Ben Horowitz. They speed through such a broad range of interesting topics that I feel I have to go back and re-listen.
In a similar pace, this conversation between Farnham Street's Shane Parrish and Jim Dethmer is so full of amazing tips for leaders on how to become more self-aware, create impeccable agreements, and create strong relationships. This one I will go back and re-listen to for sure.
Recorded one day after the racist terrorist attack in Hanau that killed nine people, this conversation between my friend Matze and Kübra Gümüşay is an important one. If you speak German, I strongly encourage you to listen to this episode about the importance of language.
What I'm watching
The Outsider – this new HBO show is perfect for True Detective fans. Mix in some fantasy, suspense, and stellar acting, I found this show captivating.
What I'm thinking about
A goal for this year is to learn more about personal finances and for the past 4 weeks, I've been testing the online brokerage app Trade Republic and started investing in some ETFs (exchange traded index funds). It's been super interesting to enter a new world (of finance and trading) that so far had been very alien to me. And given this week's volatility in the market it added another layer of learning. I'm curious to hear if you've made some experiences and can share some tips for a n00b ETF investor.
What else?!
This week's new episode of The Role Models Podcast is with Hadnet Tesfai, a speaker, moderator, and DJane. We talk about how racism is a white problem, how to train your voice to be an instrument of influence, and about acceptance and rejection in your work life. Find and listen on rolemodels.co/podcast
Thank you for reading, have a great weekend!
