Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #136
Happy Friday's Five,
and Happy May Day. May 1st in Berlin is usually one of my favorite days of the year. My friend Fiete and I have this tradition of meeting for brunch before we take our bikes to Kreuzberg to roam around and meet everybody else who is out in the city.
What I'm reading
10 Minutes and 38 Seconds in a Strange World by Elif Shafak is a spectacular novel, I loved it. It's such a moving and unique story and the writing is so rich in images. Another one of these books I couldn't put down and read in a day.
What I'm listening to
Another month goes by and what a special month that was. Here is my Spotify playlist for April filled with the songs I posted over on Insta (almost) every day of the month.
What I'm watching
Coachella is likely one of the best-known festivals in the world and not only shines with a progressive line-up but also seems to be defining the musical and cultural Zeitgeist of the moment. I enjoyed learning about the origins of the festival in this documentary, about its roots in the punk movement, and how in 20 years, it has become such an agenda-setting event in music culture. Watch it for free on YouTube.
What I'm thinking about
This week I've been thinking a lot about artists and creative people and about how they and their work is impacted by the current crisis. Museums and galleries are closed, bands can't play live shows, theatre plays are on hold. Made me want to support artists even more so I bought this artwork print by German artist Simone Florell (currently 50% discount) and some merch from the Australian band Hollow Coves.
What else
This Tuesday five years ago, Isa and I organized the very first Role Models event. Our mission at the time was to make female role models more visible so that we can learn from them and find orientation. In 2017 we added the English-speaking podcast to the monthly event series and in 2018 the German-speaking podcast. Today, we've hosted more than 110 interviews with inspiring women with various backgrounds and from different parts of the the world, walks, and life. To honor the 5 years, Isa and I sat down to reflect on the journey in this special episode of the podcast.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
