Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #137
Happy Friday's Five,
today is May 8, a special day. 75 years ago, the Wehrmacht surrendered to the allied forces, an event that ended the Second World War. This year, Berlin made it a special and unique public holiday. This and the video I share below made me think a lot about war and peace, and the destruction of an entire city I now live in.
What I'm reading
What Red Was is the debut novel by Rosie Price and it is a strong debut. Leoni at my neighborhood book store Uslar & Rai recommend it to me and tells the story about about power, privilege, and consent. I really liked it. Read the review in The Guardian.
What I'm listening to
Not sure why but I had never come across Car Seat Headrest before randomly hitting Play on their newest album that came out last week. It's been on a repeat all week since and while out on the mountain bike I thought that this album is how an indie record is supposed to sound like in 2020. It is so good and all-around a fantastic record and now part of my 2020 top list. Have a listen on Spotify.
What I'm watching
Speaking of the end of the war, this week I watched this two-part ARTE documentary (only available in Germany and France or via VPN) about the final months immediately before and after the war in Berlin. The documentary uses diary entries from locals, forced laborers, soldiers on both sides, and others as a backdrop and shows how quickly the city of Berlin went from entirely buzzing to completely bombed in just a matter of few months.
What I'm thinking about
"The truth is, we know so little about life, we don’t really know what the good news is and what the bad news is." – Kurt Vonnegut in 'A Man Without a Country'
What else?!
With ForChiefs–the coaching and facilitation company I've started with others–we've been busy in the past few weeks adapting the workshops that we designed for intense in-person experiences to work well online to continue to serve our clients. We compiled a list of learnings on our blog if you're interested to hear about our takeaways.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
