Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #138
Happy Friday's Five,
composing this week's newsletter took me twice as long as usually. A week ago out in the woods I fell riding the mountain bike and fractured my left little finger and likely the right shoulder too. This left me a bit impaired and made typing much more challenging. All is well and I'm on my way to the doc for a check up now.
What I'm reading
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is my book of the week and I really enjoyed it. A woman stops speaking after she murders her husband and her new therapist tries to make her speak again. Includes a twist of events. More info about the book.
What I'm listening to
What if the song 'Wind of Change' was written by the CIA and not The Scorpions? This question sounds insane but is the premise of a new podcast of the same name. In 8 episodes it investigates if that indeed happened and it's incredibly well done by Patrick Radden Keefe (who is also the author of the book 'Say Nothing' I recommended a few weeks ago). You must listen to this even if spies and 80ies hard rock are hard to imagine in the same story. Listen on Spotify.
What I'm watching
Sally Rooney's novel 'Normal People' is a smash hit. It was on President Obama's list of favorite books in 2019 and is still in the top 10 bestseller lists out there. Hulu turned the book into a tv series (Rooney co-wrote the series) and I've watched the first few episodes. It's a fantastic adaption and stands out because of its two main actors Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal. Propelled me back into my teenage years. Watch the trailer here.
What I'm thinking about
Speech to text dictation. To work around the limitation of not being able to type a lot and fast, I've been trying to use dictation on the phone and laptop to compose emails and messages. It takes some getting used to, works quite well on the iPhone (better than on the Mac), yet definitely needs a few years of further development to be a serious alternative to typing.
What else?!
My ForChiefs colleague Ardine asked a good Check In question today that I wanted to share with you: "Imagine you can travel again and are allowed to live three months with locals in a place you have never lived before. Where would you like to spend these three months? And what do you wish to gain from this experience?" – my answer would be to pick a favorite wine region in Tuscany, South Africa or Languedoc-Roussilon and learn how to make (big red) wine.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend, and stay safe!
David
