Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #139
Happy Friday's Five,
Typing speed has increase significantly this week and I'm happy to share a few things with you that I've enjoyed this week.
What I'm reading
City of Thieves by David Benioff. This is a five-star book and highly recommended. Benioff is known for adapting Game of Thrones for tv and this historical novel follows two characters in Leningrad during the war in 1942 on a quest to find a dozen eggs (!). A moving and adventurous story about friendship, survival, humour and devastation. More on Wikipedia.
What I'm listening to
My friend Matze pointed me to this conversation between Jim Dethmer and Tim Ferriss and it reminded me how much I love Jim's thinking on personal development and leadership. If you are interested in these topics make sure to listen to it, you will likely keep putting down notes of all the clever things Jim shares. Listen to the podcast here.
What I'm watching
Watching 'Years and Years' made me uncomfortable in a way that 'Black Mirror' did. Told through the lens of a Manchester-based family over 15 years starting in 2019, this joint BBC and HBO production shows how populism and populism can slowly creep into and change a society in just over a decade. What I'm thinking about
"Optimize your generosity. No one on their deathbed has ever regretted giving too much away." — lots of people I respect have shared this great list of 68 pieces of unsolicited life advice by Kevin Kelly that he published to celebrate his 68th birthday. I agree with and adhere to many of them and started thinking about what my own list would include. Read the full list.
What else?!
In a phone call with a friend it occurred to me that I haven't been in a big city since two and a half months. Made me wonder what returning to Berlin might be like and to what extend city life will evolve in the coming years. This short documentary about the future of cities is a good start. Watch it on Vimeo.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
