Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #150
Happy Friday's Five,
150 weeks and counting, that's almost 3 years of Friday's Five! It's been so much fun to put this newsletter together, share it with you, and connect with you. Thank you!
What I'm reading
I inhaled Ferdinand von Schirach's 'Kaffee und Zigaretten' and loved it. Deeply personal, observant, to the point. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
'Nice White Parents' is a new podcast by Serial Productions / The New York Times about building a better school system and what gets in the way. "In this five-part series, she turns her attention to what is arguably the most powerful force in our schools: White parents." Listen to the podcast.
What I'm watching
'The Year of Magical Thinking' is a book by Joan Didion that I read for the first time shortly after my mom died seven years ago and for a second time after my dad two years ago. It's a book that helped me learn to live with something that I hadn't proactively learned about before: grief. Joan Didion wrote this book in the year after her husband died and during the same time when also her daughter died. When I saw that Netflix had produced a documentary about Joan Didion called 'The Center Will Not Hold', I knew I was going to like it. In fact: I loved it. It's special, it's inspiring, and it's moving. It's a fantastic testament about love, life, and loss. Watch the documentary.
What I'm thinking about
"By their very nature, human beings are so capricious, so complex, so delightfully contradictory, that they deserve not only our consideration, but our reconsideration—and our unwavering determination to withhold our opinion until we have engaged with them in every possible setting at every possible hour." From my favorite novel 'A Gentleman in Moscow' by Amon Towles.
What else?!
My friend Katrin (who is also our designer for Role Models and ForChiefs) is starting a sustainable online shop for runners called The Good Run and currently crowdfunding to start their business. They've reached their first funding goal of 10.000 Euro and are on a path to raise the next 15.000 Euro. I just supported them and can't wait for the long-sleeve. If you're a runner and want to support, here is their crowdfunding campaign.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
