Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #151
Happy Friday's Five,
I had a fun and slow week and a series of enriching conversations while Isa and I pre-produced a bunch of podcast episodes for after the summer break. I missed this.
What I'm reading
My friend Alex recommended that I read The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt. The book tells the story of how Poggio Bracciolini, a 15th-century papal emissary and obsessive book hunter, saved the last copy of the Roman poet Lucretius's De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things) from near-terminal neglect in a German monastery, thus reintroducing important ideas that sparked the modern age. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
You all know Netflix's ta-dum sound, the sound logo they use before every show. It's quickly become an iconic sound and this episode of Twenty Thousand Hertz tells the story of how this sound was created. By the way, it also tells the story of the expanded version created by Hans Zimmer for movie theatres which I had never heard before. Listen to the podcast.
What I'm watching
My dad was a huge Formula 1 fan. He watched every race and I used to join him when I lived at home. In the past 20 years I have not cared much for the sport. Besides the huge CO2 footprint, it's loud, and it's an alpha-male circus. So I was surprised of myself when I binge-watched the Netflix series 'Drive to Survive' about the sport and I must say that I found it entertaining. It follows the smaller teams and how they compete, it explores the ambition and hunger to win from the (often very young) drivers, and It's incredibly well edited. And it made me feel connected to my dad. Watch it on Netflix.
What I'm thinking about
"For what matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty of acclaim." Amon Towles in 'A Gentleman in Mosco', my favorite book.
What else
Newsletter recommendation! I met Aussie Nick Crocker in San Francisco during my time at SoundCloud and instantly liked him. He moved back to Melbourne a few years ago with his family and works as an investor there. He started a weekly newsletter recently and it's incredibly well curated. Give it a go.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
