Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #155
Happy Friday's Five,
I'm back in Berlin and straight back into full action mode. I had a great week with existing clients, churning through email backlogs, and filled with lots of prep work for the coming weeks.
What I'm reading
'Das größere Wunder' is one of Thomas Glavinic' most popular novels and I couldn't put it down during the last days of my vacation. Two plots woven into one another–one about the protagonist's upbringing, how his friends become brothers, and what an adventurous childhood looks like. The other–the days in the death zone between the basecamp and the peak of Mount Everest. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
"Is it me or do you feel like conspiracy theories are on the rise...?" I've been wondering about why people start engaging, believing, and living by conspiracy theories lately and I am glad that my friend Luke pointed me to his wife Annabel Bligh's six-part podcast series in The Anthill Podcast about the topic. Listen to the trailer.
What I'm watching
The Social Dilemma is a documentary that just came out on Netflix about the effects of social media on our psyche, our society, and our democracy. Former senior employees at the largest platforms Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, etc ring the alarm about how their work has led to the power of the platforms and its consequences for humans and societies. Watch the trailer. Related: this piece by American Scientiest about why people believe in conspiracy theories.
What I'm thinking about
"»Ich will dir etwas sagen. Gleichgültig, wie viel Geld du auf der Bank hast, es ist immer wichtig, den Dingen des täglichen Lebens Zeit zu schenken. Einkaufen, putzen, kochen, diesen Tätigkeiten musst du immer wieder nachgehen, auch wenn du hundert Restaurants kaufen könntest.«
»Und warum?«
»Weil du sonst irgendwann die Welt verlierst.«" – from Thomas Glavinic' 'Das Größere Wunder'
What else?!
We're back from the summer break with Role Models and released our podcast episode with Marie-Anne Raue, owner and manager of the 'Tim Raue' restaurant. Named Germany's best restaurant, one of the 50 of the world's best restaurants, and awarded with a 3 stars from Guide Michelin, Marie-Anne shares the story of the early beginnings, the highlight and lowlights of running a fine dining restaurant, what hospitality means to her, and many many more anecdotes from 10 years running the restaurant. Listen to this very open and vulnerable conversation here.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
