Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #162
Happy Friday's Five,
A week of curveballs, new beginnings, and breakthroughs.
What I'm reading
'The Nightingale' by Kristin Hannah is a novel set in a small Nazi-occupied town in France during the Second World War. It's the story of two sisters, survival, and resistance. I loved this book and couldn't put it down. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
Tina Müller is the CEO of Douglas Group, the 120-year old perfumery chain. Isa and I finally had the chance to interview her for the Role Models Podcast and it was a fantastic conversation: Tina is ambitious, mission- and purpose-led, balances the big picture with an obsession for the quality of the detail. She shared with us how she's learned to let go, trust, and empower her team. Listen and learn.
What I'm watching
'The Queen's Gambit' is a Netflix show about a 9-year old orphan girl who turns out to be a chess prodigy. The series tells the story of Beth Harmon who learns how to play chess in the basement of the orphanage she's living at. It's a coming-of-age story that spans two decades and follows Beth in her goal to become the world's best chess player. I really enjoyed this series and in particular the stunning production and set design. Watch the trailer.
What I'm thinking about
"Our lives are steered by uncertainties, many of which are disruptive or even daunting; but that if persevere and remain generous of heart, we may be granted a moment of supreme lucidity–a moment in which all that has happened to us suddenly comes into focus as a necessary course of events, even as we find ourselves on the threshold of a bold new life that we had been meant to lead all along." – Amon Towles in 'A Gentleman in Moscow'
What else?!
I cam across this trailer for a movie starring Lars Eidinger and thought it looks great and wanted to share. Persichstunden came out in February this year and is based on real-life events. Set in Second World War too, a prisoner of war pretends to be Persian. His captor demands that he teaches him Farsi and the prisoner starts inventing a language that sounds like Farsi. Watch the trailer.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
