Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #169
Happy Friday's Five,
I arrived in Brussels this week in time for Lockdown #2 in my Lockdown Location #1. It's nice to be back with my nephews and my sister for a while.
What I'm reading
After reading Benedict Wells' fantastic 'Vom Ende der Einsamkeit', I immediately picked up another one of his books: 'Die Wahrheit über das Lügen', 10 short stories written in the last 10 years. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
Frequent readers know that I have a passion (and a job) in leadership development so whenever I bump into a great resource, I want to share it here too. Shane Parrish of The Knowledge Project podcast interviewed Randall Stutman about the essence of leadership and if you're an experienced or emerging leader, do not miss this conversation. Randall covers a wide range of subjects within leadership in a clear and structured way and it's required listening for every leader. Listen here.
What I'm watching
Recently I re-shared a great photo of New York City on Instagram and commented that I do not miss the noise of New York City but that I sure miss how this city makes me feel. I came across a documentary series on YouTube about NYC after watching The Alienist that is set in 1896 New York because I was curious to learn more about what it must have felt like to live in this city at that time. The 8-part series with 2-hour long episodes (17,5 hours total!) dives into the full history of the city and it's fascinating to watch.
What I'm thinking about
I've been fortunate that 2020 ends up being a good year for me. That is not the case for everyone. Many people have lost their jobs or have been negatively impacted by the crisis this year. That's why I was happy to hear from Clara–a reader of this newsletter–about free coaching services offered to people in Germany who are unemployed (ALG 1 and 2). The program spans 8 weeks and the cost are entirely carried by the Arbeitsagentur. If you would like to learn more, or know someone who this might help, please read more about it on Clara's website.
What else?!
Prof. Dr. Jutta Allmendinger is one of Germany's most important social scientists. Her fields of research includes many different subjects–from social equality, sociology of education, and labor markets to name a few. She truly is a force and that becomes clear in our conversation on the Role Models Podcast. Jutta Allmendinger really challenged us and our thinking in this episode. Listen to it here.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend.
David
