Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #173
Happy Friday's Five,
Easy week here in the country side with many long hikes and finally some sun. Hope you had a good week too!
What I'm reading
After listening to Dax Shepard interview former CIA Director John Brennan (Link), I picked up his book 'Undaunted' and enjoyed learning about the CIA through his memoirs. Overall it's an interesting book–I found myself disagreeing with a lot of things about the CIA, its role in history, and the US's foreign policy. At the same time I liked that my thinking got challenged. What became clear is that Brennan is a dedicated public servant with strong values and principles. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
Doves is one of my all-time favorite bands and after over a decade they put out a new album (Spotify) that I think is one if not their best yet. If you're into British indie, make sure to check it out. Other than that, I loved the conversation (Spotify) between Debbie Millman and Hrishikesh Hirway (one of my role models and creator of The Song Exploder and The West Wing Weekly podcasts). It just shows how great of an interviewer Debbie is and how great of a human being Hrishi is.
What I'm watching
I've been binging historical dramas and French tv shows lately and loved 'The Bonfire of Destiny', a fictional story that revolves around the historic event (so far unknown to me) that happened in Paris in 1897 when 126 people (mostly women) died in a fire at a charity event. The production is incredible: the film locations, the costumes, and captivating story. Watch the trailer.
What I'm thinking about
"Music lives in this place between intention and instinct, something that‘s actually consciously considered and something that it just felt." – Hrishikesh Hirway
What else?!
I met Steve Schlaf a few times in New York during my time at SoundCloud when he was an early-stage investor. Same as me, he started working as a coach for entrepreneurs 3 years ago and yesterday shared a super useful deck to help entrepreneurs understand the practice of coaching and how to find a coach. Check it out.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
