Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #178
Happy Friday's Five,
Thank you for the many feedback emails you sent after last week's newsletter! And thank you to those of you who made me aware of the current discussion about Justin Timberlake's behavior towards Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. I wasn't aware of his actions so I am grateful that some of you pointed me to that blind spot. And check out this trailer for the documentary 'Framing Britney' about her career and and the conservatorship that she has been living under since 2008.
What I'm reading
Next to Brit Bennett's fantastic 'The Vanishing Half', Glennon Doyle's memoir 'Untamed' is one of the most-shared books I've seen on Insta feeds in 2020. I finally picked it up and enjoy reading it a lot. Straight-to-the-point and non-nonsense insights gained by Doyle during her fascinating and unusual life. More about the book.
What I'm listening to
In Matze's podcast interview with Andrea Petkovic, a conversation I've been thinking about all week, Andrea recommends the 'You're Wrong About' podcast, a show that explores and re-examines misunderstood media events interrogating why and how the public got things wrong. The first episode I listened to is about The Stanford Prison Experiment and next up is the five-part series on Princess Diana. Find and listen to the show here.
What I'm watching
It came out in 2019, won an Oscar in 2020 and I only got to watch it in 2021. 'Parasite' is quite a movie. Set in South Korea, it follows a poor family who schemes to become employed by a wealthy family and infiltrate their household by posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals. The acting performance is incredible, the production design captivating (the house!), and the twists in the movie are... well, you'll see. Skip the trailer and watch the movie.
What I'm thinking about
My intention in 2020 was to read more books written by women to uncover some of my own biases. This week I took account and of the 52 books I've read last year, 22 were by female authors. My feeling was that the share of books by women would have been above 50% but that's the thing about biases: they distort reality. In 2021, my intention is to cross the 50%.
What else?!
Now a tradition, Isa and I record a special episode at the beginning of a new Role Models year. This time around, we reflect on 2020 and we realize that our lives couldn't be more different at the moment. We openly share professional and personal breakthroughs, walls we're still facing, challenges and changes we're making. Here's our podcast.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
