Friday's Five 🖐🏼 #88
Happy Friday's Five,
I had a slow week filled with idle time, office work, and time to read and reflect. Here are my highlights:
What I'm reading
Two books on management and leadership this week. The first, 'The Making of a Manager' by Julie Zhuo is a well-structured guidebook that works especially well for first-time and emerging managers. It balances theory, relatable stories (from her experience as VP Design at Facebook), and practical guidance. A modern management book written in inclusive language.
Conversely, I found 'The Trillion Dollar Coach' about legendary Silicon Valley coach Bill Campbell, written by Eric Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg, and Alan Eagle a bit light on specifics and too heavy on name-dropping. Experienced leaders will be able to interpret Bill's learnings but for new, I'd definitely recommend Julie's book instead.
What I'm listening to
If you're into the business of podcasting, this is a good episode to get a recent update on the industry by Gimlet Media's Matt Lieber in conversation with Philip Westermeyer from OMR.
Kaddie and Helena are the co-founders of goalgirls and co-creagency and clients of mine. Kaddie was a guest on the How to Hack Podcast and shared the story and vision of co-creagency, a new approach to experiential marketing and female empowerment. if you speak German, I highly recommend it.
What I'm watching
White Gold – Season 2 of this British comedy builds on its strong first season. It's quirky, funny, and performed by an excellent cast.
What I'm thinking about
A quote I picked up in a podcast I listened to (but forgot which one), and something I observe from time to time in organizations: "There are leaders who expect the leadership credit without doing the leadership work."
What else?!
I spent all of Saturday on a boat on a lake near Berlin and it reminded me how being on a boat on a lake makes me happy. Note to self: spend more time on boats on lakes this summer.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
