Friday's Five ✋ #190
Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello from the outskirts Brussels where I’m spending a week with my family.
What I’m reading 📖
‘We Run the Tides’ by Vendela Vida is a book I only just started reading and bought it mostly because it’s set in San Francisco where I spent a lot of time during my time at SoundCloud. I thought the novel would place me back in that city and re-discover it through the protagonists. So far, I’m mostly liking the writing as the story itself is still unfolding. It’s somehow surgical-observant if that’s a thing. Book review.
What I’m listening to 🎧
Katja Riemann is one of Germany’s most successful actresses with an incredible output of creative work. Besides her performative work, she’s been engaged in humanitarian work for over 20 years and captured many of her travels across the work as a UNICEF ambassador in a moving, informative, and eye-opening book. Her debut as a documentary film maker came out on Arte a few days ago, and we spoke with Katja about it all in a long and deep conversation. Play.
What I’m watching 📺
This was a bit of a left field choice given the theme of the movie (snow & skiing) but the cast of ‘Downhill’ intrigued me. Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus play a married couple who spend a ski vacation in Ischgl with their two sons. The premise might sound a bit dull but it’s the acting and the chemistry between the two that stands out in this movie. I am biased because I’m a fan of the two, I enjoyed this one. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“Man könnte fast vergessen, dass das Fehlermachen nicht die Ausnahme ist, sondern der Normalzustand der menschlichen Existenz.” – from last week’s ZEIT.
What else?! 💯
After interviewing Neven Subotic, former football player and founder of a foundation that brings water to people who need it most, Matze started his own donation ride on Neven’s foundation website and I chipped in. He reached 99% of his campaign goal in only a week so if you want to help push it to over 100%, you can do so here. Thank you!
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
