Friday's Five ✋ #198
Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello! I’m back in Berlin after a three-day road trip with stops in Cluny and outside of Frankfurt. I took a walk last night and felt energized by the many people outside enjoying a lazy summer evening. It’s good to see life back in the city.
What I’m reading 📖
Jenny Offill’s ‘Weather’ from last year was more of a miss for me than a hit. On my binge of short novels this week, I came across her novel ‘Dept. of Speculation’ and loved it. On the surface, it’s a wife’s perspective on her marriage. Deeper down, it’s a peek into a mind at work. More about the book.
What I’m listening to 🎧
In January, Sam Fender’s ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ was on repeat on my hikes through the hills of Soller on Mallorca. His new single is out and it’s my summer hit so far.
What I’m watching 📺
‘The Father’ starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman in a stellar performance did it for me and gave me all the feels. It confronted with the loss of my own father and the process of aging, the loss of power over your own brain, and the kind of people you want to have around. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
If you are tired of everything you possess, imagine that you have lost all these things. – a thought experiment courtesy of the Stoics found in Jenny Offill’s novel.
What else?! 💯
Matze calls it one of his highlight interviews and I agree, this is one of the best conversations I’ve heard him have. Juli Zeh is a best-selling author of ‘Unter Leuten’ and the current ‘Über Menschen’ and this podcast makes me appreciate her as an author and human being even more. I want to be friends with her and hang out with her horses.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
David
