Happy Friday! ☀️
Servus from the outskirts of Munich. Mid-way through my sabbatical I jumped back into work mode for three days on exception for two clients dear and important to me. I spent the week in a Vienna-Berlin-Munich triangle and look forward to switching back into rest mode.
What I’m reading 📖
There’s an English book store in Aix-en-Provence that I remembered from my first visit in 2018 so I went back there last week. I picked up Callan Wink’s novel ‘August’ mainly because the cover spoke to me and the story is set in Montana, a place I love. It’s a coming of age story in a part of the country that seems left behind and Wink writes empathetically about characters that appear so vivid and real. More about the book.
What I’m listening to 🎧
To my surprise, Arcade Fire released a new record called WE last week and my heart skipped a beat when I saw the album pop up in my Spotify. It took me two or three listens to fully get what they’re doing on this record and I’m into it. Three of the main songs of the album are each split into two where the first part feels like an extended version. This is definitely an album album and to be enjoyed in its entirety.
What I’m watching 📺
The Staircase is a true-crime series based on a 2004 documentary about high profile novelist Michael Petersen in North Carolina who is accused of killing his wife. Part crime series, part family saga (Petersen has a large and patch-worky family), the entire case gets a twist when a French documentary film team starts covering the case. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“If I let myself really understand another person, I might be changed by that understanding. And we all fear change. So as I say, it is not an easy thing to permit oneself to understand an individual.”
– Carl Rogers
What else?! 💯
For a while now I’ve been meaning to learn more about neuroscience and how our brain works when I heard Stanford professor and nueroscientist Dr. Jason Hoberman as a guest on a podcast. Huberman has his own podcast called Huberman Labs that discusses how our brain and its connections with the organs of our body control our perceptions, behaviours and our health. It’s excellent. The episodes are long, deep, informative, and require concentration. I appreciate how Huberman breaks down the science in a logical and well structured way – I started with the episode on sugar cravings and will for sure listen to more episodes.
Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!
