Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello from Vienna after a week in Brussels, Antwerp, and Munich. My sister and nephews are visiting us in Vienna for the first time so we’ll show them around town and go eat at our favourite restaurants.
What I’m reading 📖
The nature of my work doesn’t allow me to say No too often. The work of client services saying Yes to clients and Yes to assignments. It’s taken me a few years to find the right balance and I am happy with that balance. If you struggle with saying No when you really feel it’s a No, this article by James Clear might be a good starter.
What I’m listening to 🎧
Some time into my role as Community Manager SoundCloud I remember receiving a message from a Swedish artist who wanted to share her first few tracks and see how we could support her in the early stages of her career. That artist was Tove Lo and she went on the become one of the leading pop music acts coming out of Sweden. Her new album is out and a perfect soundtrack to a moody October.
What I’m watching 📺
A few weeks ago I shared that I loved the series ‘Yellowstone’ and can’t wait for the new season to start in a few weeks. The series’ creator Taylor Sheridan created a prequel to ‘Yellowstone’ and the Dutton family which is set in 1883 and follows John Dutton’s great-grandfather who leaves Tennessee with his family in the post-Civil War era, joins a group of European immigrants to make their way through Texas, Oregon, and Montana where they settle to establish what would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch. To me, this prequel is another winner and to my surprise loved the Western feel it has even though it’s not my favourite genre. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
While on our ForChiefs retreat, our coach shared a little model for teams which I loved discovering and have since been using in my own work with teams.
Every team has and needs four type of energies to be effective: Moving, Supporting, Opposing, and Bystanding. The Movers push things forward, the Supporters contribute to the work getting done, the Opposers balance out the Movers and ask “Are we getting it right?” or “It’s not good enough yet” and the Bystanders keep the overview, analyse, and connect the dots. When used best, all four energies are needed and when overused, they can tend to pitfalls. A great exercise to do for self- and team-awareness.
What else?! 💯
It’s rare that I get hooked on a comedian special and this one’s made the cut. The bits and humor are not for everyone but the delivery is impeccable. Andrew Shulz has so much power in his voice (and the New York accent!) and body language.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
