Happy Friday Saturday! ☀️
Hello from Brussels where I am spending the weekend for various family gatherings. Once a year we meet in November to remember the family members who have passed.
What I’m reading 📖
In the New York Times this week I read about a new non-profit called Climate Trace which monitors and publishes current greenhouse gas emissions down to the point of physical sites. Using supervised and trained artificial intelligence, satellite imagery, open data, as well as mapping and company data, Climate Trace aims to add a level of transparency about where emissions emerge. It’s fascinating (and sobering) to work your way through the map and dive deeper into the data by using the filters. Take a look.
What I’m listening to 🎧
In a record stores in Jaffa the other day, I asked the owner of the store what some of the bestsellers are at the moment. She said that people are going crazy for records by Queen, The Beatles, and Artic Monkeys. I picked up their new record as a gift for a friend and now finally worked my way through the album. I love the evolution they’ve undergone, musically, and the heavy orchestration.
What I’m watching 📺
At the Gang of Youths concert, Matze mentioned The Killers’ recent festival show at Southside Festival in Germany and recommended that I watch it because of the impeccable sound they manage to get at a festival. Playing all the hits, I loved watching this live show and am thankful that it’s available for free on YouTube. Watch!
What I’m thinking about 🧠
10 years ago I boarded a plane headed home to Belgium after my sister called me in the early morning hours of November 11th 2012 with the news that my mom had suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Yesterday, 10 years later, I boarded a plane again to come spend the weekend with my family. Sitting on that plane reminded my of the flight I took 10 years ago and the unknown blend of feelings I was experiencing. It’s still a big void not to have my mom around (and my dad for that matter) and since that day, November always felt like my least favorite month of the year.
What else?! 💯
Although I uninstalled Instagram from my phone, from time to time I log back in to see what’s new. One of my favorite accounts to follow in the past months is Italy Segreta which offers a peak into all the best things about Italy. Clicking through the stories, it’s an instant virtual journey into a country that I love. Pronto.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
