Happy Friday! ☀️
Good morning from the porch. I am sitting on the terrace overlooking a beautiful garden filled with trees, an impressive stretch of mountains, and the sun waking up to the day. Hello from the end of another week mostly filled with reading, exercising, and good food.
What I’m reading 📖
This week I continued my knowledge gap-filling reading into World War II. After reading The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, the story of the officer prison Colditz, this week I read up on the Allied landings in Normandy on D-Day on June 6th 1944 and the following three months until the liberation of Paris. What I previously missed in books and movies about the era was details about the logistics and operational level of the campaign and James Holland book ‘Normandy ‘44’ delivered exactly that. A deep study of the preparations and execution of D-Day and subsequent battles in Normandy shows the stunning feat of the Allied landings.
What I’m listening to 🎧
The National is one of those bands that feels like a forever loyal companion over the past decades. The band is back with a brand-new song called ‘Tropic Morning News’ and it makes me look forward to a new album.
What I’m watching 📺
After ‘In Bruges’, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunite with director Martin McDonagh for the movie ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’. At the tail end of the Irish Civil War in 1923, on the fictional Irish isle of Inisherin, folk musician Colm Doherty abruptly begins ignoring his lifelong friend and drinking buddy Pádraic Súilleabháin. What follows is a moving and often times funny story about male loneliness and swallowed anger. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
In the fifth decade of life, our brains start to undergo a radical "rewiring" that results in diverse networks becoming more integrated and connected over the ensuing decades, with accompanying effects on cognition.
What else?! 💯
If you’re diving into the topic of changing habits, here is a good video with a summary of James Clear’ book ‘Atomic Habit’.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
