Happy Friday!☀️
This week is/was all about preventive health. I invested some time into comprehensive medical checks combined with some fasting and downtime.
What I’m reading 📖
My friend Matze recommend ‘Das Leben des Vernon Subutex’ by French novelist Virginie Despentes a while ago and the place where I am had it on their book shelf. The first pages immediately got me hooked into the story. Having worked in a record store 23 years ago I relate with the protagonist. After running a successful record store for year, Vernon Subotex suddenly finds himself without a job and without an apartment. What follows is still what I need to discover after the first few pages, and judging from the reviews I’m in for a ride. More about the book.
What I’m listening to 🎧
The book ‘Never the Split the Difference’ is the first book I hear mentioned when people ask for tips on negotiation. Its author Chris Voss joined Lex Fridman on his podcast and I know now why the book gets recommended so often. It’s a fascinating discussion that ranges widely around the topic of negotiation and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the topic.
What I’m watching 📺
HBO’s Season 1 of Perry Mason didn’t cross my radar in 2020 but I’m tuning into season that started airing recently. After watching a recap of season 1 on YouTube I felt I could dive right in and I’m glad I did. Starring Matthew Rhys (of the excellent The Americans), this period drama set in the 1930s Los Angeles follows a defense lawyer Perry Mason who juggles his traumatic war experiences with building his profile as a lawyer in an era of depression. True to HBO’s production value, the series stands out for its mystery and style. Watch the trailer for season 2.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“If a real beginning is really new, it will feel like a crisis. Any real change should make you feel, at first, afraid. If you’re not afraid of it, it’s not real change.”
– one of the final sentences of the excellent book ‘The Nix’
What else?! 💯
Over 6 million volunteers in over 150 countries are registered on Be My Eyes, a service that connects blind and low-vision people with sighted volunteers via video for immediate support. Great stuff.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
