Friday's Five ✋ #290
Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello from Vienna where the sun was out most of the week–a week mostly off from work with lots of reading time, dog-walking, and exercising.
What I’m reading 📖
Kevin Kelly made a name for himself in 2008 with a timeless essay titled ‘1000 True Fans’ that I keep people referring to to this day. Since first reading the essay and the following posts by Kelly, I’ve been appreciating his writing and particularly loved his series of posts with unsolicited advice. Kelly now published a book filled with said advice and it includes hundreds of tweet-sized nuggets of wisdom collected over the course of his life. It’s a great and easy read that you can open at any page and makes you think about the way you want to live your life. Get the book here or listen to Kevin Kelly speak about the book on the Tim Ferriss Show.
What I’m listening to 🎧
On my quest to continue learning about and getting a deeper understanding about nutrition and what kind of nutrition works for me, I found this conversation with Cambridge University Professor and molecular geneticist Giles Yeo enlightening. Yeo has been studying brain control of body weight his entire career and in the wide-ranging conversation, he breaks with some of the most common nutrition fads.
What I’m watching 📺
Drops of God is a new Apple TV+ show based on a Japanese manga comic. Part of why it spoke to me is that the theme of the show is wine and gastronomy and part because it’s a unique story that dives into French and Japanese culture.
Frenchman Alexandre Léger, creator of the famous Léger Wine Guide and emblematic figure in oenology, has just passed away at his home in Tokyo at the age of 60. He leaves behind a daughter, Camille, who lives in Paris and hasn’t seen her father since her parents separated when she was nine years old. When Camille flies to Tokyo and Léger’s will is read, she discovers that her father has left her an extraordinary wine collection — the greatest collection in the world according to the experts. But, to claim the inheritance, Camille must compete with a brilliant young oenologist.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
When a child asks an endless string of “Why?” questions, the smartest reply is “I don’t know, what do you think?” – Kevin Kelly
What else?! 💯
A few years ago I followed Julia Cameron’s ‘Morning Pages’ journaling practice and this kind of practice helped me a lot during that period of my life. I haven’t journaled in a while and might start again after reading about this journaling framework by Substack author Suleika Jaouad.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
