Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello from Berlin where I spent a good week capped with a dinner last night to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of close friends. We sat outside, enjoyed the summer evening and excellent food, talked about big, small, fun, and serious things and shared anecdotes and memories from their wedding 10 years ago.
What I’m reading 📖
If you (like me) are interested in alternatives to meat consumption, the developments of cultivated meat are interesting to follow. The US recently approved the sale of cultivated meat for the first time and about 150 different companies hope to thereby provide alternatives to mass meat production and at the same time reduce the impact this production has on the climate. The MIT Technology Review just published their current view on this emerging sector. Two big questions remain–first, what the emissions would be like at mass scale and second, whether or not the energy used by these companies is based on renewables or fossil fuel. I’m optimistic that these two questions will eventually be answered. Here is the full piece.
What I’m listening to 🎧
The always-revered band Bright Eyes reissuing their studio albums. Each album is accompanied by a new “companion” EP where the band rerecorded five songs from the original album with new musicians, as well as a cover song. Here is one of those songs from ‘The People’s Key’ album that fits today’s summer vibe.
What I’m watching 📺
When I was twelve years old I broke my leg while skiing and was bound to the bed for a while. My aunt gifted me a GameBoy which had just come out and the first game I played was Tetris. I have fond memories of the game and had never read up on the history of how this game became a huge success (despite the odds, as I now learned). I recently watched the movie ‘Tetris’ and turns out that the story is way more fascinating and thrilling than I had imagined. It involves an inventor in the Soviet Union, British business sharks, and the perseverance of a young video game marketer. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“Apologizing for slow replies is a symptom of unrealistic demands in an always-on culture. How quickly people answer you is rarely a sign of how much they care about you. It’s usually a reflection of how much they have on their plate.” – Adam Grant
What else?! 💯
If you’re unsure which movie to watch next, here is The AV Club’s best movies of the year (so far).
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
