Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello from just outside of Brussels where I am back at my sister’s and my nephews for the weekend. I spent the week in my home town in the East of Belgium for a workation and to celebrate my 44th birthday with my oldest home town friends–who I get to see way too little.
What I’m reading 📖
In my coaching practice I work a lot with first-time founder CEOs, leaders, and managers. Often their role evolves rapidly from contributor to manager to leader to executive and the expectations change faster that the leader can adapt. One aspect are key skills and competencies and another important aspect is to update one’s mindesets. Adam Bryant, author of several books on leadership, captured some of these required mental shifts in a new book called ‘The Leap to Leader’. In this Harvard Business Review piece, Bryant shares some of those mindsets and I think they’re spot on. Read more.
What I’m listening to 🎧
My friend Matze recommended that I listen to the new Blur album ‘The Ballad of Darren’ and that was a good tip. I hadn’t paid much attention to the band for a while and this new record is a nice way to rediscover the band. The song ‘The Narcissist’ is a good first teaser.
What I’m watching 📺
HBO is known for some blockbuster television series and yet it puts out some lesser-know high-quality series. One of those is Somebody Somewhere, “captures the bittersweet beauty of life in all its minutiae, never forgetting to laugh in the face of adversity.” Well put. Set in Kansas, the story follows Sam as she deals with a mid-life crisis after her sister’s death and finds comfort in a singing group full of outsiders. It’s charming and warm show. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“What do you need me to do more of, less of, or differently to better help you?” – a great question for a leader to ask their team members.
What else?! 💯
My sister and her partner took us out to a vegan fine dining experience in Brussels last night and it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Set in a cozy dining room in the neighborhood of Ixelles, Humus x Hortense is all about local herbs and vegetables. The drinks pairing was excellent and quite creative and unique. If you’re ever in Brussels and fancy a stellar vegan tasting menu, be sure to check it out.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
