Happy Friday! ☀️
Ready to unwind after another intense week in Berlin and Vienna, facilitating groups between 10 and 100 people. The respective topics of each workshop as well as the group sizes were a nice challenge to soon close of the work year with. Special treat on Tuesday to be invited to a dinner at the lovely Michelberger Hotel and to see friends I hadn’t seen in a long while.
What I’m reading 📖
As a coach with a preference for extraversion and the need to think out loud, I am aware that this can turn into a tendency of talking too much. It’s a fine balance to speak about mental models with enthusiasm and stay in contact with my coachee. And as we’ve been trained to, our core skill is to ask good questions. Marty Nemko, host of an NPR radio show found a rule that works for him and calls it the Traffic Light Rule. Find more about it here.
What I’m listening to 🎧
I met Steve Jang many years ago in San Francisco during my time at SoundCloud and always admired his broad range of interests spanning from venture capital, film, music, and culture. I haven’t seen him in years and loved finding this podcast conversation in my feed. Steve is Korean-American and recorded this conversation on the ground in Seoul with Tim Ferriss and it was fascinating to hear him speak about his Korean heritage, Korean culture, and to learn about his vast knowledge of the country’s history, culture, and current developments. I learned a ton, loved his eloquent way of speaking, and made me want to visit Korea right away.
What I’m watching 📺
Couples Therapy is a show I’ve heard recommended many times and only started watching this week. I got hooked immediately to this documentary series where real couples visit a couple’s therapist to work through their issues and grow together (or sometimes apart). I love the show, the protagonists, incredibly well edited, and the music is excellent. The parts I love most about the show is when the therapist Orna visits her clinical advisor for moments of supervision. It’s a great show, I took some learnings for my coaching, and picked up on some concepts for my own relationship. I watched all three seasons in a week. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“At your absolute best, you still won't be good enough for the wrong person. At your worst, you'll still be worth it to the right person.” ― Karen Salmansohn
What else?! 💯
Steve Schlaf is a fellow coach and internet friend based in upstate New York. Every year Steve shares a beautiful reflection booklet free for people to download and use for their yearly reflections and to set intentions for the new year. I’ve downloaded my copy and will use it over the holidays. Download it here.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
