Happy Friday! ☀️
Happy new year! I hope you had a good closure of 2023 and jumped into the new year with lots of enthusiasm and excitement. For a slow week, my week was packed with lots of admin tasks and some travel to Berlin and back.
What I’m reading 📖
How many expert opinions do we agree with that most others do not? That’s an interesting question that Scott H. Young tried to answer and the result is an essay with seven of said expert opinions. The opinions and his answers all made me think and reassess my own opinion on them. Read more.
What I’m listening to 🎧
Long-form podcasting is perfect for long car rides. I believe I read somewhere that podcasting became so popular in the U.S. many years ago because people spend so much time in cars. This week, I had two veeeery long car rides and I spent some time with Tyler Cowan. His rapid-fire and sharp questioning without being confrontational is impressive. Here he is with legendary early-stage startup investor and former painting artist Paul Graham:
And then I discovered that famed record produced Rick Rubin has a podcast himself. It’s called Tetragrammaton and I had missed it. And in one of his podcast episodes the tables are turned and he interviews Tyler Cowan.
What I’m watching 📺
Slow Horses is back with season 3 and it’s been running for a few weeks now on Apple+. I’ve loved the first two seasons and season 3 so far does not disappoint. Based on a book series of the same name, it perfect for television: British, spies, moody characters, mystery, intrigue, humor. Gary Oldman is perfectly cast for the role of the notorious and obnoxious Jackson Lamb who leads a team of sidelined intelligence agents. Watch the trailer for season 3.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“Never take advice from anyone in a tie. They'll bankrupt you. Don't ask a general for advice on war, and don't ask a broker for advice on money.” – Nassim Nicholas Taleb
What else?! 💯
I’ve long wanted to sign up for a Masterclass account to follow some classes from a variety of categories. My wife gifted me a subscription for this year and I’ve started exploring the many classes available. I am starting with the cooking classes (and the class on bread baking by Apollonia Poilane) and am impressed by the quality of the productions. If you have an account yourself, send me your favorites. Check out Masterclass here.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend, and a great new year 2024!
