Hello from the end of a week off. I stayed home to focus on health and time with family. A very mundane week in the neighbourhood with time to rest and to enjoy time with my wife and daughter. And some good meals with old and new friends in the city.
What I’m reading 📖
I love a good list of life advice that often helps me either validate aspects of how I live my life or remind of aspects I want to give attention to. I came across one of those lists on Twitter this week by Dan Go on 30 things no one tells you when you reach the age of 40. Number 7 was in focus for me this week. Read more.
What I’m listening to 🎧
If you’re in for a history lesson on Russia to understand historic context and factors that led to the current conflict, I highly recommend this conversation between Lex Fridman and the Ukranian historian Serhii Plokhy. I appreciated how far back in history they go, how the different historic eras build on each other, and how Plohky manages to communicate his vast knowledge and research into great storytelling.
What I’m watching 📺
Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest is more a work of art than a movie. What stands out is that there is no real plot or story, no hero’s journey or usual drama in three acts. It stands out for the banality of evil, for what’s there but can’t be seen or heard, for its sound design, and the sobering observation of apathy. It’s an unusual cinematic take on the Holocaust and likely the most ‘boring’ movie that made me think and contemplate for many moments after finishing watching it. Watch the trailer (but I’d recommend to watch it without seeing a trailer first).

What else?! 💯
There is a new restaurant in my neighbourhood, a hood that is still new to me and that lacks some restaurant options I am used to from Berlin. La Cantina de la Cucina Alchimia is far off the bustle of the city center and a welcome addition to our hood. Excellent food, very friendly service, and a focus on fermented produce. Check it out.
