Friday's Five ✋ #424
Cue... Ready to reset
Happy Friday! ☀️
Hello there, I am about to leave for Berlin to spend a weekend with my besties. This week was a home office week and it felt good not to travel for work. There is something about December and the final weeks of the year. My idea is/was that things start to settle but in reality, it’s a very busy time balancing current client assignments, onboarding new clients and planning existing clients for the new year, and
What I’m reading 📖
The beauty of Substack, the platform I use to send this very newsletter every Friday, is that it’s also a network and community of writers of all sorts. And one of my favorite Substack genre are personal essays. Some of which I’ve shared here before, others that I read and don’t share. This, and the many of my own open thought processes makes me sometimes think what it would be like to try writing an essay. I wouldn’t even know how and where to start. And then this post showed up in my feed: a beginner’s guide to writing personal essays. And by the way: the word essay in its is beautiful. It comes from the French word essayer which means “to try” or “to attempt.” Read more.
What I’m listening to 🎧
Australian-born vocalist, songwriter, and producer Chet Faker came onto my radar during my time at SoundCloud. I lost sight of him for a few years and look forward to their new album that will be released in a few months. Here’s one of the first songs released from the album.
What I’m watching 📺
In January, during my few days off alone in the North-West of Mallorca, my interest for the history of the United States of America led me to reading American Colonies: The Settling of North America. Besides, I kept a list of additional books to read about America’s history but then life and work caught up and it remained the only book I read on the subject. This week, Ken Burns, best known for making incredible documentaries released his magnum opus: The American Revolution. In this six-part series (with up to 2 hours per episode!), he and his team dive deeeeep into the events that led to the founding of the United States. It’s rich in history and filled with a stack of voice-overs by prolific actors. I only made it to the end of the first episode so far but can’t wait to continue watching. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” – Carl Rogers
What else?! 💯
Do you remember Philip Barantini? Perhaps not his name but very likely his recent work. He is the director of the highly acclaimed Adolescence. After this fictional one-short drama, he teamed up with singer Ed Sheeran to do it again: One Shot with Ed Sheeran in New York City. I realize I don’t care much for Sheeran’s music but I do like him as a person. And this experience is a winner. Watch the trailer and the Making Of.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
