Friday's Five ✋ #427
Nothing Time
Happy Friday! ☀️
This is my favourite time of the year: two, three harmonious days with the extended family. The world slows down, the phone left somewhere, the only thing that matters is enjoying the time together for hours and hours. Good food, good wine, good company. And what follows, is even better. The slow days after Christmas when the outside world goes quiet and for once a year, no one wants or needs anything.
What I’m reading 📖
For the past weeks, I’ve picked up reading books a bit more compared to the rest of the year. I have a tendency to buy big, large, and long books but then it takes me months to churn through it. This was the case some years ago with Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. The Secret Society–her first novel–is another one of her biggies and rather than read it, I chose to listen to its audiobook, read by Tartt herself. I am about half-way through, fully emerged in the world she created and the six main characters. A group of college students, their odd behaviours, and The Incident. Tartt is a master with words. Her descriptions, chapter-long monologues of its characters, and the language she gives them. More about the book.
What I’m listening to 🎧
Here’s my twelfth and last monthly playlist of the year with a mix of new songs by artists new to me as well as some rediscoveries from my the playlist that is synchronised with my Shazam app and years worth of scanned tracks.
What I’m watching 📺
National aesthetics is a thing, judging from countries like Denmark or Switzerland who understand that design can play an important role to the well being and feeling when visiting a country. Now Switzerland teamed with a Swiss sound artist to create a song entirely recorded from Swiss sounds. And again, it looks incredible next to sounding incredible. (Hat tip to Paul for the share).
What I’m thinking about 🧠
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” – Socrates
What else?! 💯
I’ve heard about rucking vests for a few years from different people. Two months ago, I got one and wear it during my hikes. I bought the 30kg version and it lets me remove or add weights as I please. I’ve grown used to it and enjoy hiking up the steep hills in woods. Ruck!
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
