Friday's Five ✋ #446
Bananas!
Happy Friday! ☀️
We arrived in Belgium this morning for a little tour visiting friends and family. We start near Brussels to visit my sister and her family, then head to Flanders for a garden party with on my mom’s side, and then we head to my home town to spend a few days with my cousins, godfather, and friends. The last time we visited my hometown, my daughter was still small and I’m excited for her to experience everything and see everyone now that she’s 2,5.
What I’m reading 📖
J.L. Carr's A Month in the Country is a slim, quiet masterpiece. A shell-shocked WWI veteran arrives in a small Yorkshire village to restore a medieval church painting and spends a summer slowly returning to himself. Nothing dramatic happens and that is entirely the point. Soaked it up in a single day in its audio version. One of those books that stays with you longer than its length suggests. More about the book.
What I’m listening to 🎧
The month of April delivered new tunes that fit the folk, singer-songwriter, Americana vibe of these past weeks. New tracks include old and new companions: Hiss Golden Messenger, The Barr Brothers, Sean Angus Watson, and many others. Take it for a spin:
What I’m watching 📺
While reading Justin Townes Earle’s biography I asked myself what the origins are of country music, the genre that over time would branch out to sub-genres like Americana where Townes Earle felt at home. Researching, I found several mentions of documentaries worth watching that go to the origins. Ken Burns’ Country Music is at the top of the list of those recommendations and knowing him and his masterful documentary work (I loved American Colonies featured here a few months ago), I started watching this 8-part documentary this week. The first two episodes were exactly what I was looking for and I look forward to keeping watching. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
"Roots are not a prison. They are a starting point." — unknown
What else?! 💯
At 46, I think I can land on banana as my favorite fruit. It’s great energy pre- and post-workout, it’s sweet but not too sweet, and perfectly portioned. So our household buys lots of bananas every week. My preference, though, is when they are just ripe, not to early, not too later. A Korean grocery stores found out that I may be their perfect customer.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
