Friday's Five ✋ #449
And like Aristotle said...
Happy Friday! ☀️
A good week. Last weekend, the new outdoor kitchen made its debut with a first barbecue with friends. Monday off in the garden and my father in law’s birthday. Stuttgart for a client on Wednesday. A mix of calls and garden yesterday. Some weeks the rhythm just works. Life is good.
What I’m reading 📖
John Williams is best known for Stoner, but Butcher’s Crossing hits differently. Will Andrews leaves Harvard in the 1870s to head west in search of something he can’t quite name, and signs up for a buffalo hunting expedition that turns out to be nothing like what he imagined. The landscape is vivid to the point of feeling physical, the details of the hunt unflinching, and when an early winter traps the group in the mountains, the story shifts into something darker and harder to put down. More about the book.
What I’m listening to 🎧
Philine Sonny has appeared in playlists over the years but never got a proper listen until now. Her new album Virgin Lake changed that. Moody and dark in one moment, upbeat and folky in the next. An album that covers real ground rather than staying in one lane, which is rarer than it should be. A German singer-songwriter who doesn’t sound remotely German.
What I’m watching 📺
Came across a meme of General Zhukov dramatically revealing his chest full of medals in slow motion and assumed The Death of Stalin was a serious historical drama. Started watching and realized within minutes it is anything but. A pitch-black political satire that plays like theatre, with an ensemble cast scrambling for power in the days after Stalin's death in 1953. The comedy is uncomfortable in the best possible way because the events it is based on actually happened. The meme does not do it justice. Watch the trailer.
What I’m thinking about 🧠
„It is the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it.“ - Aristotle
What else?! 💯
It’s jarring to then be faced with how provisional our place can really be in someone else’s mind.
Phew. I wish this onto no one. “I Stumbled Across My Boyfriend’s ChatGPT and It Ended Our Relationship”
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend!
